Fetal Surveillance by Electronic Fetal Monitor

Abstract
The technical innovations and accumulated knowledge¡¯s in perinatologic fields during past decades have allowed us to evaluate the fetus in utero more accurately and have had a great improvement on both quality and quantity of newborn survival. Among the bioelectronic methods of fetal assessment, continuous electronic fetal heart rate monitorings are supposed to be the greatest impact on modern obstetric care.
Electronic fetal monitor is the instrument designed for continuous measurement of fetal heart rate and maternal uterine contraction.
The principles of electronic fetal monitoring were first promulgated by Edward Hon in late 1960s, and nowadays these methods are widely applied throughout the world and became a routine procedure in most of obstetric survices.
In spite of a number of limitation, continuous fetal heart rate monitoring obviously have more benefits such as reduction of intrapartum stillbirth rate and perinatal mortality as well as improved Apgar score.
First of all, we had to understand the physiology of. fetal heart beat and basic scientific foundation about electronic fetal monitor for better and precise interpretation of results of fetal heart rate monitoring.
This paper is presented for thorough reviewing the control mechanism of fetal heart rate and clinically useful fetal monitoring system.
